I teach you how to write a thank you email after the interview. This is a short and sweet thank you note after an interview that you can prepare before your job interview. You'll learn how to write the first draft and tweak your thank you email after meeting so that you are well-positioned to ace the job interview!

Wooo hoo you’re almost at the end of the grueling interview process!

So now that the hard part is out of the way, it’s time to think about what happens after the job interview. 

You want to stay fresh on the hiring manager’s mind, right? Exactly! That is why a thank you email is one of the most underrated albeit imperative elements to acing the interview.

Here’s the thing. You want to already have a sense of what you are going to thank the hiring manager for (besides their time, obvi!) by prepping this step ahead of the interview.

That’s right, Explearners. And I know you may be scratching your head right now thinking but I haven’t even met with the interviewer yet. How can I possibly know what to thank them for?

I get it. But here’s what’s up. By thinking what you are going to thank the interviewer for ahead of time, you are framing the way you’d like the interview to go. 

Call it more than wistful thinking. You are setting the expectation for what you’d like the outcome of the interview to be.

The other thing about prepping the thank you note ahead of the interview is that you are expecting things to go your way. So you’re not only being positive but also proactive.

And, if you are thanking somebody for something that implies that you got something from them.

Thus, by planning out the thank you note you are implicitly outlining what you will get out of the interview.

With the prewritten thank you note in mind; you’ll know how to frame what you bring to the interview.

After your interview you can revisit the draft of the thank you email, make the necessary tweaks based on details from the interview and you’re ready to hit send!

When you do get around to sending the thank you note, do it between two and twenty-four hours after having the interview. 

The general rule of thumb is to send it as soon as you complete the interview so that it truly is a follow-up. If you have an interview on a Friday, send it that day or first thing Monday (not over weekend)

Here is a high-level template you can use to guide you:

  • thank you for their time
  • insightful observation about their product that also highlights your skills/expertise
  • excitement around contributing to their mission/near term objective
  • looking forward to next steps/continuing conversation

One of the best ways to feel more relaxed for the impending interview is to prepare. 

And as we’ve uncovered in this blog post, you can even prepare for the direction you want the interview to have through framing. By drafting the thank you email ahead of time, you are setting yourself up for success.
